There were tornado warnings all over the area while we were all safe and sound in the basement busy with promotion tests. The children's test was huge! It was so great seeing all those white belts taking their first ever tests. The look of surprise when they broke boards was precious. The first test ran a little longer than we had planned, but everyone was very patient and cooperative and it all turned out well. After the first test, we had two special events. First, brand new black belt Daniel received his belt, certificate, medal, and pin. He gave a wonderful acceptance speech, which he graciously allowed us to repeat here. Some of the spelling was changed to match our school's spelling of Korean terms: First I would like to thank Master Laura, Master Kim, Master Shepler, and Master Vicky. Next, I would like to thank my parents for taking me to class and supporting me. It's been a great experience participating in Tae Kwon Do. I have learned kicking techniques, poomse, and how to break boards. I have also learned discipline, control, and focus. I have gained courage and confidence. I am not afraid of things that I used to be afraid of. I will carry the lessons I have learned in Tae Kwon Do forever. Thank you. Instructors Laura and Vicky would especially like to thank Daniel for their "promotion" to the rank of Master! We hope it gives Master Kim some ideas! Afterward, Master Kim introduced Master Vern Williams. He came to watch our test and to give a little talk. Master Williams trained in the same line of TKD as Masters Kim and Shepler, under Grandmaster Ki Whang Kim. He told us he started out in Tae Kwon Do because he wanted to be able to kick down a house! But, what surprised him was learning patience. Martial arts have become a part of his life. It even helps him with his other job: teaching math at Longfellow Middle School. Facing a room full of young teenagers at school is not so scary after you've taught taekwondo! The second test was much smaller -- only about 14 adults and high belt children. We all enjoyed this test, though it was tiring watching the student testing for black belt! We also had 2 children black belts taking gup tests in preparation for their 2nd dan test. And the grand finale was watching Instructor Song taking his gup test! It is too bad ALL our students didn't get to see him -- he was the perfect example of putting 100% effort into his test. Master Kim announced that belts will be awarded in regular classes over the next week. Congratulations to all our students! September belt test The next belt test is scheduled for Friday, September 17, 2004. Please get your completed application, check, and (children only) copy of your latest report card to one of the Masters or Instructors BEFORE the test day. 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Children, white belt to light blue belt There will be no classes during the tests. News Master Shepler will be out August 24 through September 9. Instructor Linnell will teach the Monday/Thursday morning classes beginning August 30 until the master returns. News The 7:40 p.m. black belt classes have been temporarily suspended. Please direct any questions to Master Kim. Master Shepler will be out August 24 through September 9. Instructor Linnell will teach the Monday/Thursday morning classes beginning August 30 until the master returns. There will be no 11 a.m. class on Thursday, August 26, 2004. Olympic Taekwondo "The Olympic Taekwondo competition will be held from August 26 to 29 (Days 13-16) at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex, Sports Pavilion, which has a seating capacity for approximately 8,000 spectators." Source: www.ustu.org News Goodbye Master Seo. Saturday, July 31, 2004, was Master Seo's last day with our school. He will be returning to Korea and hopes to set up his own school there some day. He promised never to forget us and asked that we all remember his name (Seo Kyeong Oh) and work hard in taekwondo. He was a wonderful addition to our school and will be sorely missed by us all. We wish him a safe return home and the best of luck. We will be closed Labor Day weekend, September 4-6, 2004. Poomse CD-Rom installation Student Jim P. offers us this helpful advice for setting up your poomse CD ROM: 1. Place the CD ROM in proper drive and follow prompts to install If you have a problem with these directions, email the webmaster who willl put you in touch with Jim. He has generously agreed to help you by phone. "The CD is very cool and helpful," says Jim. July Belt test The belt test held on Friday, July 16, 2004, was a relatively small one. The a/c held up to the smaller crowd, making the whole evening very pleasant. As always, the tiniest martial artists were adorable showing off their newly learned skills and all the students worked hard to be their best. At the second test, we had the honor of watching an eight year old boy test for black belt. Not only was he able to execute any of the ten poomse called out by the master, but he had also memorized all the kicking combinations. Whether it was combination "purple belt #2" or "red #1" or "green #2," he remembered the kicks and sequences and executed them to the best of his ability. Despite the grueling tests of endurance, he kept up his smile and was an inspiration to all. Between the two tests, four children - James, Drew, Grant, and James - received their first dan black belts! Each one gave a wonderful speech. Seven year old Drew was kind enough to share his with us: First of all, I would like to say thank you to Master Kim, Master Seo, Master [Shepler], and Instructor Vicky. I have really enjoyed doing Tae Kwon Do for over 3 years and I have learned many valuable things such as you should never give up. That has helped me in school and other sports. I have also learned that once I set a goal for myself, that if I work hard I will achieve it. It is an honor to receive a black belt from your school. Finally, Master Kim introduced Master Seo's fiancée, who is also a taekwondo master and is also named Master Kim (no relation to Soon Ho Kim). She is visiting from Korea and has been assisting Master Seo in class recently. Please join us in welcoming her to our school and our country. We hope she has a wonderful time here. Belt test The next belt test is scheduled for Friday, July 16, 2004. Please get your completed application, check, and (children only) copy of your latest report card to one of the Masters BEFORE the test day. 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Children, white belt to blue belt There will be no classes during the tests. Be on time and look sharp. Bring sparring equipment to the test. News We now have for sale a CD-ROM with all the tae geuk poomse and the first three black belt forms! You get to choose one of five characters (or all 5 in a group) and one of five locations (outside, in a dojang, etc.) as the setting and then can watch the form from different angles. It has a cool, 3-D look to it. Makes a great gift and will help you prepare for your next belt test! See Master Kim to purchase one today! Supplies are limited. Soon we will be adding a family class at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This will be taught by Master Kim. Kids, this will be your chance to bring Mom and Dad to class and have them try taekwondo. Tell them to wear loose, comfortable clothing, such as sweats, and to leave their jewelry at home and their shoes in the changing room. Maybe they'll like it so much, they'll sign up to learn taekwondo with you! Just think, you get to spar with your parents and not get in trouble! Well, as long as the Master tells you to spar. Watch for announcements here and at the school and get ready for family fun! News Master Kim decided to keep the school open during the Independence Day weekend. So work off those extra calories by coming to class on Saturday (7/3) and Monday (7/5)! The 11:00 a.m. class on July 5th is canceled. News We're making improvements to our web site. The test was divided into a children's low belt test and a children's high belt and all adults test. It was a warm evening and the a/c had a hard time keeping up! Between the tests, Master Kim presented adult students Peter and Laura their first dan black belts, medals, and school black belt pins. They both worked very hard for this honor and we salute and congratulate them. Laura is training to be an instructor at our school and we hope Peter will consider this vocation, too. At the second test, five students tested for black belt. It was a grueling test, especially in the heat. Master Kim was very pleased with their performance. Many of us were surprised to learn later that two of our black belt candidates are in first grade! Six year old James and seven year old Drew had to memorize 10 poomse in addition to mastering all the skills and techniques required at their level. Bravo! What's New Master Kim announced a special "bring a friend to taekwondo class" program, which runs March 15 through March 27, 2004. Have your friends wear comfortable clothes, such as sweats, that don't have buckles or belts and they can join you in class. Family members are welcome to try a class, too. March [2004] Belt Test The March Belt test was a big success. We had lots of students testing this time. It was fun watching the tiny tots testing for their high white and yellow belts and exciting watching the adults and teens testing for black belt. And that doesn't even include the many ranks between! And let's not forget our lone adult white belt, Angela, who did a great job. She's working hard trying to catch up with her two high ranked sons. Bravo to all our students! Master Kim thanked all the students and parents for their patience during the recent renovation and said to make it up, Master Seo would perform another demonstration. And, wow, what a demo it was. One of our ceiling tiles took a lot of abuse from his high kicks and quite a few people were surprised when he kicked an apple off the end of a sword and apple pieces went flying everywhere! The excited crowd of spectators then cajoled Master Kim into doing a demonstration. The children, not satisfied when he broke several boards with his pinkie -- at thier request -- demanded another break and he complied, breaking several more boards with a spear hand attack. As he was dressed in a suit, he was lucky the children didn't demand a flying kick! Did anyone recognize Master Williams sitting in the audience? Some of our students might have him as a teacher in a couple of years, when they get to middle school. He told me he enjoyed the test and thought everyone did a great job. We were pleased he chose to visit and invited him to come by and work out with us any time. Master Kim commented that some of the students need to work a little harder on their poomse. If you want to practice at home, we have some aids on line. Print out your form and have someone read it as you go. There's not enough there to learn the form from scratch, but enough to jog your memory for each move. White belts, click here to read our section on taekwondo basics. Please be on time and look sharp! Bring sparring equipment to the test. In addition to testing, we'll be celebrating the official opening of our newly renovated dojang. We will have a demonstration by Master Seo. The last one was outstanding! You'll also want to watch the black belt test. McLean Day 2004 will be Saturday, May 15, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Lewinsville Park. We are making arrangements to have our demonstration team perform. Watch this space for more information. Big changes are coming. In addition to repairing the water damage to some of our rooms (see below for status of repairs), Master Kim is planning to rearrange our space and spruce up the school. The waiting/observation room will become our new study/library. Kids can do homework there while waiting to be picked up or while siblings are in class. (Donations of magazines, suitable for families, will be welcome.) A new waiting room will be set up outside Master Kim's office. A coat of paint and more lights are planned for the women's dressing room. Got other remodeling ideas? Send them via email and the webmaster will get them to Master Kim. More news! Beginning in March, we will be adding a family class at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Dojang Repair Project Pardon our mess! A pipe broke in the building and flooded our main training room. The building management must repair the pipe and replace our floors and walls. In the short term, we will hold class in the second training room. Meanwhile, the building manager will try to find us space to work out in another part of the building. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible. February 12th update: the dojang has been dried out and waterproofing work continues. The room will be remodeled as the repairs continue. The HVAC system will be moved to the back and we'll have a little extra room to work out. Watch for a new color scheme when the floor is replaced! February 16th update: the 11:00 a.m. class is canceled. The dojang is being painted with a waterproofing material which has strong fumes. It is also very cold with the windows opened. It is suggested that anyone sensitive to fumes call before class tonight to see the current status of the training room. It may be aired out by then, but we are not sure. February 19th update: repairs are continuing apace. Wallboard is going up in the dojang today and the room is looking brighter and larger. The waiting/observation room is also being renovated. Parents may, if they wish, wait in the office. February 26 update: The dojang walls have been painted and the ceiling should be painted by now, too. New carpeting is in, too. We'll be able to use this space very soon. The new mats, which will be installed over the carpeting, will take a bit longer to get here, but we hope to have them in the first week of March. The waiting room furniture was moved to the small training room while carpeting was installed, but it should be moved out by class time this afternoon. March 4 update: The covering for the new mats is in. We're working out on it to stretch it out and get it ready for when the new mats arrive. Our new color scheme is blue on beige. A workman came in today to measure the mirrors. The broken ones will be replaced, the others will be put back up as is. March 10 update: The new mats are on the floor and the cover is being installed on top. Some of the baseboard is in and painted. We're pushing to get everything done in time for the belt test. While the floor installation and painting continues, class will be held in the second training room. We thank you for your patience. March 13 update: The mirrors are now up. Alas, one side of our floor is still being held in place by duct tape. Master Kim apologizes for the delay; he has had trouble getting the building management to finish the job in a timely manner. The waiting area in front of Master Kim's office is now ready as is our new study/library (formerly the observation room). March 30 update: Repairs are complete. The dojang, waiting area, and study/observation room are all open and in use. What's New Master Seo would like to learn English and American culture.
