While there, he will visit our former student JJ, who is training at a taekwondo summer camp in Korea. July 15, 2005 belt test Thirty four students and their families braved the downpours and resulting heavy traffic to attend the July belt test. The masters and instructors were very pleased by the improvements they saw. Almost everyone had memorized their poomse and kicking combinations. Good job! There were quite a few black belts in attendance, both testing and receiving belts. Congratulations to: * Alex B, received his 1st dan black belt And to: * Dan B, tested for 1st dan black belt There were a couple of surprises that night, too. Master Kim announced that he was going out of town for a couple of weeks, so he awarded new belts immediately following each test! And Dan B. was surprised to be testing for black belt! He prepared for a bo black belt test, but did a great job keeping up with David and Steven on the 1st dan black belt test. Master Kim explained that Dan’s family is moving back to Canada in a few weeks. Belt levels are not standardized below the black belt level. At a new taekwondo school, Dan could lose a year or more of training, if he went in with a color belt. Because Dan was almost at the black belt level, Master Kim wanted him to try for black belt. Dan has been in class nearly every day (sometimes in both morning and evening classes on the same day) for weeks and has received extra training for this test. Dan did a great job, and we are all pleased that he will move back home with a 1st dan black belt. Congratulations! Testimonial On May 9, 2005, Masters SH Kim, HS Kim, and Shepler; Instructors Laura and Vicky; and two adult TKD students participated in The Potomac School's health day. Way to go, Jina! http://www.ncs.cathedral.org/Default.asp?bhcp=1 Master Soon Ho Kim is too modest to announce this, but we recently learned that he now holds the prestigious position of Advisory Counsel, Legislative Committee, World Taekwondo Federation. Congratulations Master Kim! As part of his new duties, he will be traveling to Spain in April for the WTF elections and the 17th World Taekwondo Championship. March Belt test Our March belt test was held on Wednesday, March 30, 2005. It was a small test after the recent spring break. We had 29 children at the first test and somewhat fewer adults and children at the second one. As usual, it was exciting watching the bo-black and black belts test. They do multiple board breaks in a row. Part of their test is choosing the breaks and setting up the board holders. Or as Master Kim put it, "this is the only time you can tell your seniors what to do." Jina tested for her black belt. Daniel, Pablo Pedro, and Alfred took gup tests, preparing for their 2nd dan test. The big excitement of the evening took place in the second training room while most of us were in the main room. While student Angela was testing, her son George fell and broke his arm! Fortunately, there was a doctor/mom in the house who sprang into action. By the time Angela and an instructor were informed of the injury, George had a makeshift splint of magazines and blue tape holding his arm in place! Master Kim called the family later, but George and his mom were still at the emergency room. All of us wish George a speedy and complete recovery! News Please welcome our new master, Ho San Kim! Master Kim is a 4th dan black belt and a student at American University. He will be teaching for us whenever he can on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Please get your completed application, check, and (children only) copy of your latest report card to one of the Masters or Instructors BEFORE the test day. 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Children, white belt to light blue belt There will be no classes during the tests. The snow is beginning to stick to the roads and is forecast to be heavy this afternoon. Please stay home and stay safe. New for March: family classes! Lost & Found There are still a lot of unclaimed items at the dojang, including: * Nike 630 black and white shoes News As of Monday morning (1/31/05), the parking lots around our building were all plowed. Still, you may need boots and should exercise caution as the snow around the edges is melting and may freeze tonight. January Belt Test Friday night's belt test was a great success. We congratulate all our students for a job well done and thank parents for their support. It was very exciting watching JP and Cliff test for their first degree black belts, as well as watching the black belts taking gup tests on their quest for a 2nd degree belt. Blue belt Angela deserves a round of applause for not flinching when she was directed to execute orange belt and green belt poomse and kicking combinations in addition to her blue belt ones. Bravo! After the tests, Master Kim announced that some students passed conditionally. Their belts will be held two months, to allow them to improve. He stressed that this is a great opportunity. Rather than immediately jumping into learning new skills, as they would if they recieved their new belts this week, they will have more time to perfect the skills of their present level. Because each belt level builds on the skills of the previous level, students who perfect the current level skills will be more successful in the future. Several students will also be receiving patches for "best side kick" or "best round house kick," which they may then attach to their uniforms. Master Kim kept the names a secret, so we will all be surprised when he presents the patches during in-class belt ceremonies. Attention High School Students As you think about college, consider what you might write on your college application: Good: Earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at age 13. Better: Have a 1st degree TKD black belt and am working on my 2nd degree. Best: I am a TKD 2nd degree black belt candidate, perform with my school's demo team, and assist the instructors and masters in teaching my junior students. A letter of recommendation from Grandmaster Soon Ho Kim is attached. If you help out teaching, your instructors get to know you better and will better be able to write you an outstanding letter of recommendation. Make an appointment to see Master Kim if you are interested in becoming an assistant in the children's classes. Mature middle school students looking for opportunities to enhance their high school applications may also meet with Master Kim (along with their parents) to discuss options. Lost & Found After the January 28 belt test, we found quite a few items! * Gym bags belonging to James & Will There are also various pieces of gear in the changing rooms. If you are missing stuff, please check the shelves. Parents, please label your child's sparring gear, TKD gym bags, and uniforms -- they all look alike. News If you were invited to test but could not attend the January 28 belt test, make-up tests will be held during classes on February 2 & 3. New belts will be awarded during classes the week of January 31 - February 4. In case of snow, call the school and ask if classes will be held.
