2006 Archive

These notices appeared on our web site during the year and were moved off as they became obsolete. They are in reverse order — most recent to oldest — except for the calendar of events, which is at the end. Links were good at the time we posted them, but they often go bad after a while — we don't guarantee them.

This archive covers January - September 28, 2006

Severe Weather Policy

In case of bad weather, please check our web site before coming to class. Depending on the conditions around the school, we may need to cancel classes. We will make every effort to announce on this site if we are open or closed. If there is no notice and you are unsure, please call us first. Your safety is our top priority.

We will be closed Saturday through Monday (9/2 - 9/4) in observance of Labor Day. Have a safe weekend and we will see you on Tuesday!

Free Event at Korean Embassy

Master Ho San Kim invites all his students to attend a special event at KORUS House (Korea-US) at the Korean Embassy. Prof. Ha Jihong will talk about Korea's dog Sapsaree (Bearer of Fortune). Prof. Ha Jihong has a Ph.D. from Illinois State University (Microbiology and Genetics) and has conducted over 20 years of research on Sapsaree. There will also be a reception featuring Korean foods.

July belt test

As usual, the July belt test was a small one, with fewer than 40 students testing at both sessions combined. The largest groups were white belts and red belts. We had a couple of special case tests. One student is leaving the US very soon and took a combined bo black and black belt test. We wish Sam the best of luck as he returns to his native Finland. He will be missed. Another student, Carlo, was home from college where he trains with one of Master Kim's colleagues. He returns to our school for his belt tests and to train during the summer. Petra joins us for a year while she is on assignment in the US from Germany. She tested for placement at our school. Everyone did a great job.

Master Kim will be heading out this weekend for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Indias, Colombia. Therefore, he awarded color belts immediately following each test session. Those students who tested for bo black belt or black belt will receive belts at the next test session, in September.

Between the test sessions, Master Kim awarded first degree black belts to Katherine and Wyatt and a second degree black belt to Katherine's brother, Daniel. Congratulations!

Congratulations

Congratulations to black belt student Paul, who was accepted at Brown University. Paul will train with us during the summer and plans to join the university's taekwondo team in the fall. We wish him all the best.

Pardon our Dust

Construction has finally begun. Our bathrooms are being completely renovated and the small training room is being remodeled. We will continue training as usual in the large room. Students may use the bathrooms on the floor above ours. Parents, please watch that young siblings stay away from any construction materials. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

July belt test

The next belt test is scheduled for Thursday, July 20, 2006. Please get your completed application, check, and (children only) copy of your latest report card to one of the Masters or Instructors BEFORE the test day.

5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Children, white belt to high blue belt
6:30 - 8:00 p.m. All adults plus children red belt to black belt

There will be no classes during the tests. Be on time and look sharp. Bring sparring gear to the test. Click on "promotion" on the side bar for help getting ready for the test.

Independence Day

S. H. Kim US Tae Kwon Do will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th.

Pardon our Mess

July 8, 2006: Construction did not begin last Saturday, as we thought it would. It should begin this evening.

July 1, 2006: The floor is now dry and we're back to using 100% of the dojang. Our next project is remodeling the bathrooms. The landlord is supposed to begin this evening. We hope to have them both back in service very soon. In the meantime, you may use the ones on the floor above. Parents of young children might want to stay during practice Monday in case they are needed to accompany their kids upstairs.

June 28, 2006: Some of the record-breaking rainfall of the last few days seeped into the dojang. We are drying out the area with dehumidifiers, a/c, and a fan. Classes are continuing as usual.

Closed Memorial Day weekend

We will be closed Saturday, May 27 through Monday, May 29, 2006 in observance of Memorial Day.

May belt test

The next belt test is scheduled for Friday, May 19, 2006.

March belt test

We had a big turnout for the March 24 belt test. Between the two tests we got to see an impressive breaking demonstration by Master Baek. He did two jump spinning kicks – including the very difficult 540 spin – and a flying side kick over the shoulders of two standing adults!

After the demonstration, we got to watch Nathan and Vijay test for first degree black belt and three black belt students take their gup tests. We saw some terrific breaking techniques, including flying side kicks over volunteers from the audience.

Master Kim announced that he would award new belts during classes on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. He is leaving on Wednesday for a weeklong trip overseas. He would like to personally present new belts, but if you cannot come by Tuesday, Master Baek will present your belt during your next class.

Photo Day

On Friday, March 24, there will be a photographer at our school to take professional sports photos for anyone interested. You can see samples of his work in the waiting room now. Ask Master Kim for more information. Think what great memories you'll have of your taekwondo training! And remember to order extra photos for all the relatives.

More classes for kids 6 years old and under

We've added more classes for our youngest martial artists. Children up to (and including) age 6 can attend classes Monday through Thursday 4:10 to 4:50 p.m.

January Belt Test

Belts earned at the January 25th test will be awarded in classes. Congratulations to young black belt Alex for an awesome display of breaking techniques during his first gup test in preparation for the 2nd dan test. Master Kim was as surprised as he was pleased by the three rapid-fire precise breaks.

Open Feb. 11, 2006

Looks like the snow is late, so we'll be open today.

Lost and Found

We are accumulating quite a collection of winter jackets and socks. Please take a look in the second studio and changing room for any items you may be missing. Most are in the bins over the lockers in the men's changing room. Unclaimed items will be given away in the spring.

We also have several wristwatches. If you are missing one, please email the webmaster with a description and we'll check if we've got it. Watches are kept indefinitely.

Attention Black Belts

If you earned your black belt at our school but did not pick up your certificate, please contact Master Kim. We award black belts and certificates at belt tests, between the two test sessions. Please phone before the test day so that we can have everything ready for the ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, please arrive early wearing your uniform and current belt and be prepared to give a short speech.

Testimonial

On May 9, 2005, Masters SH Kim, HS Kim, and Shepler; Instructors Laura and Vicky; and two adult TKD students participated in The Potomac School's health day. Master Kim ran a well attended demo class for the middle school. We received this thank you note from Kerry Kirk, health department, The Potomac School:

S. H. Kim,

Thank you so much for volunteering your time and expertise with our students. For the past two years, your activity for health day is the favorite! Also, please thank all of your volunteers for helping!

Many thanks,
Kerry Kirk

Parking wars

It seems that all the buildings around us are suddenly enforcing parking for tenants and customers only. They aren’t fooling around – they’re using tow trucks!

The parking lots associated with this building are:

  • in front of this building (for McLean Eyecare and Immediate Care only)
  • immediately in back of this building (not behind the trees)
  • across the street, between the Safeway and bank parking lots

The lot behind the trees out back belongs to another building. The lots on either side of this building belong to other buildings. Please park only in designated lots or on Beverly Road.

Attention High School Students

As you think about college, consider what you might write on your college application:

Good: Earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at age 13.

Better: Have a 1st degree TKD black belt and am working on my 2nd degree.

Best: I am a TKD 2nd degree black belt candidate, perform with my school's demo team, and assist the instructors and masters in teaching my junior students. A letter of recommendation from Grandmaster Soon Ho Kim is attached.

If you help out teaching, your instructors get to know you better and will better be able to write you an outstanding letter of recommendation. Make an appointment to see Master Kim if you are interested in becoming an assistant in the children's classes.

Mature middle school students looking for opportunities to enhance their high school applications may also meet with Master Kim (along with their parents) to discuss options.

Poomse CD-Rom

We have for sale a CD-ROM with all the tae geuk poomse and the first three black belt forms! You get to choose one of five characters (or all 5 in a group) and one of five locations (outside, in a dojang, etc.) as the setting and then can watch the form from different angles. It has a cool, 3-D look to it. Makes a great gift and will help you prepare for your next belt test! See Master Kim to purchase one today! Supplies are limited.

Student Jim P. offers us this helpful advice for setting up your poomse CD ROM:

  1. Place the CD ROM in proper drive and follow prompts to install
  2. Disregard instructions to register with idance (unless you can read Korean)
  3. When prompt asks to launch Taekwondo Player, reply "yes"
  4. If three files appear on a prompt, double left-click "taekwondo Player"
  5. Otherwise, pick the poomse on the right (by number) and select class on the left
  6. Use controls at bottom to play, pause, replay etc.
  7. Place the pointer on the screen and move it about to change the perspective of the view (eg. view from above, behind or either side)

If you have a problem with these directions, email the webmaster who will put you in touch with Jim. He has generously agreed to help you by phone. "The CD is very cool and helpful," says Jim.

Help Improve our Web Site

If you wish to contribute any ideas or materials for our school website, contact our webmaster, Ms. Linnell, either in person or by email. Instructor Linnell is at the school on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings.
