Taegeuk il jong

To help you remember your poomse, have a friend read these descriptions as you practice. Stances and foot work are not included; you will learn them in class. If you cannot remember how to move from one element to another in your poomse, ask your instructor.

In this form, all moves facing the left or right are done in walking stance; all moves facing front or back are done in forward stance.

1/4 Turn left, low block, step, middle punch.
1/2 Turn right, low block, step, middle punch.
1/4 Turn left (to front), low block, middle punch.

1/4 Turn right, out-to-in block, step, punch.
1/2 Turn left, out-to-in block, step, punch.
1/4 Turn right (to front), low block, middle punch.

1/4 Turn left, high block, front snap kick, middle punch.
1/2 Turn right, high block, front snap kick, middle punch.
1/4 Turn right (to back), low block, step, punch, ke-up!

Wait until the instructor tells you to end, then
1/2 Turn left (to front), ready stance.

Taegeuk pattern

Movement 1: Begin at A facing G. Turn 90° to the left, stepping into a left walking stance towards B. Execute a low block with your left arm. Be sure to turn your head and look at your attacker prior to all of your turns.

Movement 2: Step forward with your right foot into a right walking stance. Execute a middle section punch with your right fist.

Movement 3: Turn 180° to the right into a right walking stance facing C. Execute a low block with your right arm.

Movement 4: Step forward with your left foot into a left walking stance. Execute a middle section punch with your left fist.

Movement 5a: Turn 90° to the left, moving your left foot out into a left front stance facing towards G. Execute a low block with your left arm.

Movement 5b: Remain in the same stance. Execute a middle section reverse punch with your right fist.

Movement 6: Turn 90° to the right by bringing your right foot to your left foot and stepping out into a right walking stance facing E. Execute a middle section block to the inside (“out-to-in block”) with your left arm.

Movement 7: Step forward with your left foot into a left walking stance. Execute a reverse middle section punch with your right fist.

Movement 8: Turn 180° to the left into a left walking stance facing D. Execute a middle section block to the inside (“out-to-in block”) using your right arm.

Movement 9: Step forward with your right foot into a right walking stance. Execute a reverse middle section punch with your left fist.

Movement 10a: Turn 90° to the right, moving the right foot out into a right front stance facing G. Execute a low section block with your right arm.

Movement 10b: Remain in the same stance. Execute a reverse middle section punch with your left fist.

Movement 11: Turn 90° to the left into a left walking stance facing F. Execute a high section block with your left arm.

Movement 12: Keeping the left foot in place, execute a middle section front snap kick with your right foot.

Movement 12b: Step down with your right foot into a right walking stance. Execute a middle section punch with your right fist.

Movement 13: Turn 180° to the right into a right walking stance facing H. Execute a high section block with your right arm.

Movement 14: Keeping the right foot in place, execute a middle section front snap kick with your left foot.

Movement 14b: Step down with your left foot into a left walking stance and execute a middle section punch with your left fist.

Movement 15: Step 90° right by bringing your left foot to your right foot and then stepping out into a left forward stance facing A. Execute a low block with your left arm.

Movement 16: Step forward with your right foot into a right front stance. Execute a middle section punch with your right fist. Ki yup!

Finish: Wait until the instructor tells you to end. Turn 180° to the left, pivoting on your right foot into a ready stance facing G.
